CANDIDATES' THE COMMON INTEREST IN ACTION SCORE
The Common Interest in
Action Score reflects the percentage of Common Interest in Action
positions that a candidate supports. The Common Interest in Action
takes positions when there is a consensus of two-thirds or more on a given
proposal among the more than 100 members randomly assigned to review our
policy brief for that issue. The Past Score reflects issues on
which we took positions that have already been voted on by both the House
and the Senate. The Future Score reflects positions that we have
taken that have not yet come before both the House and the Senate for
votes. The Past Score for incumbents is based on their actual
votes. The Future Score for incumbents, as well as the Past
and Future Scores for challengers, are based on candidates' answers
to our questionnaire.

| Statement by Candidate about Why Running: |
| |
I am running because we are facing critical problems that are
not receiving the attention they need, and missing great opportunities
due to legislative inaction. I believe I can make a positive contribution
for change. Serving people and public service are very important
to me. These are among the issues on which I am running:
Our Children
• Improve and strengthen education pre-K through college
• Statewide day care licensing standards
• Supports State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)
Growth
• Make growth pay for itself
• Improve transportation and other infrastructure
• Protect our neighborhoods
• Supports impact fees
• Supports local control and decision making
Economy
• Improve wages and business incomes through a healthy, diversified
business environment
• Encourage and support small businesses
Health Care
• Ensure affordability and quality
Substance Abuse
• Comprehensive substance abuse treatment
• Expand the use of drug courts
Protect Our Air, Water and Outdoor Way of Life
Open, Ethical and Responsive Government |
| Candidate Statement about The Common Interest: |
| |
I know two of The Common Interest’s board members, and I
have great respect for them and the other two board members.
I am very supportive of The Common Interest’s efforts to bridge
the partisan divide and bring people together for common sense
solutions. If elected, I will work closely with those who express
an interest in legislative matters, including The Common Interest.

| Candidate Bio: |
| |
I am 54 years old and have resided in Boise for 33 years.
My wife, Christy, and I have been married for 30 years. We have
two daughters, and two grandchildren. I am the managing partner
of the Boise law firm of Mauk & Burgoyne, and served as
an Adjunct Professor in BSU’s Management Department for 5 years.
I have authored three bills which were enacted into law and
I have co-authored two legal books. In college, I was appointed
an intern by then Governor Cecil Andrus. Following college,
I served as an assistant to Secretary of State Pete T. Cenarrusa
before holding two other positions in state government. I have
served my party as a precinct captain, legislative district
chair, county chair, state convention delegate, platform committee
chair, and, most recently, National Committeeman and member
of the Democratic National Committee. |
| Candidate Statement on Partisan Politics
and Special Interests: |
| |
I have been involved in government and politics in Idaho
since the early 1970s. Over that time politics has become more
partisan, more polarized, more dominated by special interests,
less open, less ethical, less responsive and more remote from
ordinary people. Changing that dynamic is critical to working
effectively on the people’s business. I believe I can help achieve
that. In my career, I have worked with many different interests
and members of both political parties to fashion solutions by
moving past differences to find common ground. |
